Welcome from the Headmaster

‘Small school, big family’ is the phrase that sums up St Richard's perfectly.  Since my first contact with the school I have been overwhelmed by how much parents, pupils and staff – both past and present – treasure this community.  Tales abound of how the school, underpinned by its warm Catholic ethos,  has transformed children’s lives, giving them a defined sense of identity and awareness of their strengths, which has led them to succeed in so many fields and contribute to communities far beyond our school.

I firmly believe that at St Richard’s we give children the very best start a parent could wish for.  Both as teacher and father of three teenagers, I have seen that the close-knit and secure environment of a small prep school is one of the most precious gifts we can bestow as parents.  As a boarding school we are able to maintain a close family atmosphere where children have the time to ‘be children’, demonstrating and exploring their talents far beyond the classroom, so that they become outstanding all-rounders.

The support and dedication of our experienced staff at St Richard’s, where each child is known well, noticed and nurtured carefully, are the foundation stones from which children can also take risks and be challenged, within a warmly supportive environment. The confidence this breeds, whether academic, sporting, in extra-curricular activities or most likely a combination of all of these, means that we have an enviable record for gaining awards and scholarships to senior schools.

Fred and Juliet de FalbeThough not a Catholic myself, I value very much the Catholic ethos of St Richard’s, where children of all denominations are warmly welcomed and there is a binding sense of community.  The opportunity for daily stillness, reflection and prayer adds a dimension too often missing in our busy lives, as well as a strong sense of self-respect and awareness of others.

I can only give you a flavour of the many qualities and facilities that we offer at St Richard's.  Choosing the right school for your child is a huge commitment, educationally, financially and emotionally; perhaps one of the most important decisions a parent makes.  Therefore I would urge you to visit our beautiful and unique school in order to meet the pupils and staff of whom I am so proud.  I look forward to welcoming you.
